Taiwan officials report a 61yr old Male as first death from coronavirus

A 61 year old Taiwanese man has contracted and died from the coronavirus, being the first to die from the deadly disease in the county.

The man was in hospital for two weeks infected with the coronavirus when he died and it is not yet known how he came to be infected as Officials report that the deceased did not travel to mainland China.

Officials stated in a Taiwanese newspaper that the deceased worked as a taxi driver and that it was possible he was infected by a passenger and that they are investigating all leads.

To date Taiwan is aware of 20 of its citizens who are infected with the coronavirus including a 51 year old relative of the deceased man.

Taiwan, which has a population of 23.7 Million people has set up a strict ban on travellers coming in from the neighbouring mainland to prevent any further spread of the deadly virus.

To date the novel coronavirus has infected over 69,000 people around the world with the majority of those cases being in mainland China. 1,669 people have died from the virus with four of the deceased outside mainland China.
